The team is led by former No. 1 draft pick in the 2004 NHL Draft Alexander Ovechkin and teammates Nicklas Backstrom, Mike Green and Braden Holtby. The Capitals joined the league in 1974 as an expansion team. The team made it to its first playoff series during the 1982-83 season and won its first divisional title at the end of the 1988-89 season. It made it all the way to the conference finals in the spring of 1990. The Capitals went to the Stanley Cup finals against the rival Detroit Red Wings after winning the conference title in 1997-98. Things started getting even better once the Red Wings drafted Alex Ovechkin in 2004. Ovechkin has led the team to two straight President Trophy wins as the most successful team during the regular season before capturing the Stanley Cup at the end of the 2018-19 season.
